Project is just what the doctors ordered

Property specialist Johnson Fellows has been appointed to deliver an impressive £2.4 million new medical practice in Telford, Shropshire, it was announced today.

The Birmingham-based chartered surveyors is working alongside Parkway Medical Services Ltd to create a 12,000 sq ft high quality facility on the site of a former school and leisure centre known as Madeley Court.

It is Johnson Fellows’ second major medical project in Telford. Last year it oversaw the £3 million redevelopment of Donnington Medical Practice in Wrekin Drive. The doctors involved in the new project are currently based at Court Street Surgery in Madeley.

Andrew Rowson, building consultancy partner at Johnson Fellows, said the medical centre would provide consulting rooms for eight GPs, plus nurse practitioners, and modern facilities for consultation assessment. There is also additional space for other medical related uses such as physiotherapy and expansion space making the facility future-proof.

Construction work has begun and the ground floor slab is in the process of being completed. Work on the external walls is expected to start soon. The development is due to be completed in August and be open to public in September.

He added: “The doctors will be moving from a 1970s bungalow to a new purpose-built facility so it is a huge move for them and will deliver enormous improvements for patients and health workers too.

“We helped the practice secure the land and we have fully designed the new medical practice. We are acting as project managers on site during the construction phase and we expect to bring it in on time and on budget.”

Johnson Fellows is providing a complete package of support, from the feasibility study and quantity surveying exercises, full architectural and structural design, through to building services design and project management.

Andrew added: “Our clients wanted flexibility and control of the build and, having seen the success of our similar scheme in Donington, they were keen to appoint us to deliver their new facilities. This is a sector that we believe is growing and we are keen to take on further projects which will provide patients and doctors with a much-improved environment for modern medical care.”

The new building is expected to achieve BREEAM very good status. It is designed to be environmentally friendly and sustainable, energy efficient with a greater level of client and community involvement.

The company is also talking to two other medical practices in the region with a view to delivering similar developments.
